Understanding the role of krengjai in Thai culture
This year, I completed a comprehensive pragmatic study on the social understanding of the Thai cultural practice called krengjai. The research began with a thorough literature review of definitons of krengjai, in all of its transliterations, seen in English literature. These definitions were arranged as a geneology of understanding to find how English language understanding has developed through different research trajectories. The definitons were placed into fifteen general understandings and translated into Thai language. A survery instrument was developed with several Thai and Western linquistic researchers and distributed to Thai people at public venues. The results of the study demonstrates the contextuality of the practice of krengjai and the reason why krengjai continues to elude Western understanding.
